Banquets
A year-end banquet for boys and a separate one for girls had been held at least since 1927. The building of the school gymnasium allowed for the banquets to be combined and held at the school, resulting in the first “Spring Banquet” in 1954 which was renamed the “All College Banquet” in 1958. It brings together the entire student body to celebrate the spirit and accomplishments of Luther College. Organized by the Student Representative Council and supported by parent volunteers who serve the formal meal and elegantly decorate the school gym, the banquet includes live entertainment, skits, and speeches and gives students a rare chance to dress up in their finest.
The Mother-Daughter Banquet was held every autumn in a downtown hotel, usually the Hotel Saskatchewan. Since many girls had moved away from home to attend Luther College and live in the dormitories, the banquet was an opportunity for mothers and daughters to visit. Girls also enjoyed the break from eating in the dining hall and the opportunity to wear their formal dresses. The Mother-Daughter banquet was established by the Lambda Sigma Theta, a sorority club for girls that was organized in the fall of 1939. The club also sponsored a year end Girls Banquet in the girls’ dining room. The last Mother-Daughter banquet was held in 1985.
Alumni banquets were common during the years that an alumni association was active. In anticipation of the 25th anniversary of Luther College (Regina) in 1951, around 500 Luther graduates gathered in the newly built gym for a dinner and to organize themselves. Though it dissipated several years later, the alumni association was reorganized in 1955 at another banquet. These days, most alumni events and communication are organized by staff.
