Campus Grounds
After deciding to relocate Luther Academy from Melville to Regina, the building committee purchased 18 acres on the city’s west side next to Government House, following consideration of several other sites. These included 15 acres east of Campion College (then located at Albert Street and 23rd Avenue, now the site of Regina Christian School), properties at Winnipeg Street and College Avenue (where Miller and Balfour Schools stand today), and 16 acres at Broad Street and College Avenue, south of St. Chad’s College.
The layout, structure, and style of Luther College were influenced by representatives from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, a seminary with long-standing connections to Luther Academy in Melville and its staff. Regina architect J. H. Puntin was brought in to refine the plans and oversee construction by Poole Construction. The building was made fire-resistant using reinforced concrete and steel, with bricks sourced from Alberta.
The basement housed a large kitchen, dining hall (still in use today), and science laboratories. The main floor contained classrooms, a chapel, and administrative offices, while the second and third floors included dormitories for both male and female students.
When the building officially opened in September 1926, it stood prominently in a largely undeveloped area. Along the south side of Dewdney Avenue—from the rail line (now Lewvan Drive) to the RCMP Depot—only two buildings existed: Government House and Luther College. Rising three and a half storeys, the college could be seen from miles away.
Expansion continued over the following decades. By the late 1930s, a girls’ residence (Federation Hall), a new chapel, and a principal’s residence had been added. A gymnasium, designed to also function as an auditorium, theatre, and chapel, opened in 1951. In 1956, a west-side classroom wing with an observatory, six classrooms, and updated science labs was completed. Another addition in 1989 introduced a new library, computer lab, elevator, and art studio. Most recently, in 2014, the Merlis Belsher Heritage Centre and Semple Gym were completed, bringing new classrooms and student common areas.
